Burma democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi has spent 14 of the last 20 years in house arrest. On August 11, she was convicted by a prison court of breaching the terms of her detention after John Yettaw, a U.S. tourist, swam across the lake and stayed two nights at her home.

The court imposed a sentence of an additional 18 months of house arrest. In 1990, the ruling military junta refused to recognize her National League for Democracy's landslide victory in elections.
