In advance of a U.S.-Vietnam human rights dialogue scheduled for May, a human rights organization is urging State Department officials to voice U.S. concern over the rise in Vietnam of activist groups tied to the harassment of dissidents and religious communities.
Government-supporting Red Flags groups now frequently mobilize to attack Catholic priests and parishioners in Vietnam in what social media and rights groups describe as state-sponsored abuse in the one-party communist state.
In February, parents of Catholic schoolchildren barred from school in the Dien Doai commune of Nghe An province were attacked outside school gates by government-linked thugs when they sought a meeting with school administrators.
Meanwhile, in October 2017, two priests from a diocese in central Vietnam were surrounded by a mob of 300 waving red flags, while in May hundreds of thugs in Nghe An attacked a group of Catholic parishioners, including women and children, sending dozens to the hospital.
Speaking in an interview with RFA’s Vietnamese Service, Nguyen Dinh Thang—president of the U.S.-based rights group Boat People SOS (BPSOS)—said that his group wants the activities of the Red Flags groups included in the bilateral meeting scheduled for May.
“Before the dialogue round, the State Department will meet with the Vietnamese ambassador to the United State to discuss the topics of the coming talks,” Thang said. “We want to promote awareness of this issue of the Red Flags groups so that it will be included in the dialogue.”
On Feb. 21, Thang and other members of his group met with Sam Brownback, U.S. ambassador at large for international religious freedom, to discuss the spread of Red Flags attacks against Catholic communities in Vietnam.
“The ambassador was very interested in the Red Flags groups and wanted us to give him more information about them,” Thang said, adding that in response BPOS produced an 18-page report outlining the growth and missions of the groups, including creating divisions between Catholics and non-Catholics and blocking community attempts to protest government handling of environmental disasters.
“I believe that this issue will now be addressed in State Department reports [on human rights and religious freedoms] and in the dialogue,” Thang said.
“We have evidence showing that the government has facilitated the activities of the Red Flags groups,” Thang said.
“They have given them venues to hold meetings, including large meetings involving several groups. None of this can happen without government support, at least at the local level,” he said.

During the war, one of my father pet-peeve was the communist Propaganda machine, and he especially despised the filths come out the mouth of Nguyen Thi Binh (There were others, but I can only recall her). I believe she was on the air wave broadcasting for the northern goons. At time he got close to her, but quickly realized the she was just a puppet. It’s the shady characters behind the scene that he wanted.
As for this Red Flag crew – really? As if you didn’t get enough from the Ho’s youth! Please, you are boring me -yawn! Impress me/us with something new. Sounds like you just regurgitate an old chapter from your adopted father Chinese and Russian. Yeah, yeah, red is an aggressive color and if you have enough ignorant people waving them then it could be intimidating – get it, got it, bought a t-shirt, and burn it already! The same ole technique, don’t you think you goons come to a full circle already?
So, what is the Red Flag crew? I’d bet that it’s made up of Ho’s Youth – but now grown up, older, and they haven’t realized their dreams/goals. Hence, they are still jealous against other people’s successes. This drives them mad and angry as ever. Thus, you goons still feed them the ole propaganda.
No wonder VN can’t get her head above the water! Sounds like too many ignorant people around and they are weighting down and holding back the country and everyone else. Take my advice, send these people get some education. Let’s start with Confucius. He is from China right? Oh, that will work perfectly! See, I give you options and sunny dispositions at times, but my father would rather bomb you – and he did on may occasions.
