What is deeply worrying about this and the increasing number of similar cases of overseas interference in free speech emanating from Beijing is not the fact that such interference is attempted at all but that it is tolerated with such indifference by the authorities in the countries affected.
It's one thing for an autocratic government to abuse its power in the country it governs, but it is quite another thing when it attempts and almost succeeds in attaining the seemingly impossible goal of abusing power it doesn't even have in a country thousands of miles away and entirely beyond its jurisdiction. The public outrage such high-handedness merits by way of a response is deafening in its silence.
