Gutmann :

The funny - and I mean really funny - thing is that Ogyen Trinley himself is a supposed rebirth of communist Chinese authorities' mercy. It was in June 1992 that a fraction of Lamas, in co-operation with Beijing, proclaimed him as an official successor to the 16th Karmapa Rigpe Dorje, while another branch of the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism, strongly rejected this claim. Today there are two young Lamas claiming to be the 17th Karmapa. The other Karmapa ist Thinley Thaye Dorje and today has the support of a network of more than 900 Buddhist centres in about 60 countries. It is astonishing that the media reports ignore these facts. To be clear: I have nothing against Karmapa (candidate) Ogyen Trinley Dorje - he's gone through tough things. But a closer look at his story may show what could happen when Tibetan spiritual matters become the bait of power politics.

How can atheist communists know anything about religious re-incarnation, let alone picking and choosing one?
