Ridiculous. The ICT hasn't been relevant for decades but now they feel the need to dust off their old playbook and comment on this situation.I worked closely with the ICT from 1990 to 2007 and watched them tumble from vibrant to morbid. In later years, the ICT would fire missives into the wind and "call on China" to do this or that with, predictably, no effect other than to, perhaps, validate their fundraising.
Yes, we'd all like to see the Panchen Lama alive and speaking his mind truthfully, but the same old method of having Washington arrogantly shouting demands at China will result in nothing--as always. There is absolutely no way China will put the legitimate Panchen Lama--if he is even alive--up in front of an international audience and let him speak in any manner that is in any way critical of the Chinese Communist Party. Period.
The current U.S. President is most definitely looking for a way to irritate and widen the growing wedge it is creating with China, and I'm sure Mr. Trump had no idea about the Panchen Lama until he actively began seeking the means accomplish his aims. Nothing brings out the shrill rhetoric from Beijing more than America telling them what to do about anything Tibetan.
So now we will have to endure a few rounds of this in the media. Tibet will once again be used as a political pawn. Nothing will be accomplished other than an increase in tensions and, tragically, we may never know what has become of the Panchen Lama.
