As many Tibetan analysts have speculated, that the current Karmapa Ugyen Trinley Dorjee would be the most suitable and likely successor for the 14th Dalai Lama, if the later chose to emanate, rather than following the traditional reincarnation. There is much to gain if the Karma Kagyu school unit under the mantle of Karmapa's spiritual leadership. He is extremely magnanimous by even meeting the late Sharmapa when he was alive to bring about reconciliation within the two factions. As Thinley Thaye Dorje is disrobed now, hence naturally his credibility for spiritual role is diminished.

Reply to this commentYou forgot to mention that there are two young Lamas claiming to be the Karmapa. Orgyen Trinley was nominated by a rebel faction within the Karma Kagyu School who managed to get the political support of both the Communist Chinese government and the Tibetan government-in-exile. Thinley Thaye Dorje was recognized as the Karmapa on purely traditional religious rules by the second highest Lama of the Karma Kagyu tradition, H.H. the late Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche. Karmapa Thaye Dorje is the spiritual head of more than 850 buddhist centres in 72 countries - probably the biggest buddhist network world-wide. He is strictly keeping out of politics.

It's extremely unlikely the current Karmapa would be chosen as successor to the 14th Dalai Lama because as we know they belong to two different Buddhist schools. The Dalai Lama is the head of the Gelugpa or Yellow Hat sect and the other is the head of the Karmapa or Red Hat sect. One cannot be the successor to the other. The next Dalai Lama will be through reincarnation, not selected by the Chinese Govt. But if you're talking about the head of the Tibetan Govt-in-Exil, well His Holiness devolved political power so our chief executive (Sikyong) is chosen via elections every 5 years.
