The craven cringing of the University of Sydney's vice chancellor and other officials in the face of warnings against the Dalai Lama's visit by Chinese government officials is a blot on the reputation of Australian academe. It also explains why so many of the world's most prestigious universities such as nearly all of the US Ivy League universities have refused overtures to host a so-called Confucius Institute on campus, because of the chilling effect this tool of authoritarian Chinese soft power can have on a college campus.
