RScott from Drake, CO, USA :

Unlike central Helmand Farmers of Afghanistan who have been cash crop double crop farmers since at least the mid-1960s and are not poor but produce some 30% of the world's opium as the primary cash crop. And internationally there has been no support for their traditional cash crops like cotton and peanuts that they have been requesting help with since 2001. MARKET SUPPORT FOR LEGAL CASH CROPS IS A MUST. FARMERS WILL SWITCH OUT OF OPIUM IF THE ALTERNATIVE CROP IS SOMETHING THEY UNDERSTAND (LIKE TRADITIONAL CASH CROPS)AND AND THERE IS A RELIABLE MARKET WITH REASONABLE PRICES.DO THE OBVIOUS.
