A private citizen from Australia :

I note the BBC report today concerning the Reuters journalists.
The progamme "From our own correspondent", Nick Beake, wonders whether freedom of the press is on trial in Myanmar as he crams into a Yangon courtroom where two journalists are in the dock accused of receiving classified documents as part of their investigations into the massacre of Rohingya people.

I have no transcript but relying on memory the Reuters journalists face 14 years incarceration.

The perpetrators of the murders, verified and convicted for the atrocities, face 10 years incarceration.

The calculation of penalties can miss the point.

The victims of the atrocities cannot speak however the perverse legal system of Myanmar speaks loudly to a world audience of fellow human listeners.

The BBC correspondent reported a hot room cooled perfunctorily by a slow ceiling fan reflecting a cursory attempt to cool the news lines including Reuters reporting this gross indignity.

I am not a journalist.

However attempts to censor journalism is not a good idea particularly Reuters correspondents.

Happily I can email my local member of Federal Parliament and mention this matter for consideration.

"Get Away Australia" a programme broadcast by Channel Nine 3 minutes ago featured in a Myanmar tourist infomercial reported by Ray Martin.
Ray Martin is greatly respected in Australia.
The evidence concerning Reuters staff reported I believe is accurately reported by your media.

I can only express absolute abhorrence of criminalising people who risk reporting the truth.

Perhaps radio, tv and other media outlets could observe a minute of silence, dead air annually for journalists who just told the truth.

Damien Parer, Charles Bean and many other journalists including from other nations including many retained by Reuters would be nauseated by an obsequious well paid promo by and for a Government which jails journalists.
