The necessity for these trials can be seen in Nuon Chea's blatant refusal to accept any responsibility for the murder of myriads of innocent Cambodians due to his ruthless policies as a former Khmer Rouge oligarch. In fact, he seems proud of having extinguished so many lives. At least his junior colleague Duch was able to express some remorse.

Far from protecting Cambodia from Vietnamese invasion, the Khmer Rouge totalitarian regime actually provoked a military incursion from Hanoi that toppled the Khmer Rouge from power. The Vietnamese installed Hun Sen as leader; he remains the leader up to the present day.
