"Laos is a communist
banana republic."
Priceless (note that banana republic is like a urban definition for military dictatorships, hence a double-meaning pun). Couldn't agree more.

Reply to this commentIt's not just the ground that is polluted. All the small streams (probably rivers also) in northern Laos have been polluted with chemicals from these banana (and other) large scale Chinese agriculture. Many villages in these rural areas use these streams for washing and even drinking water. Boiling does not remove the chemicals. The people of northern Laos will be suffering for years, if not generations, to come because of this.

Reply to this commentWhat the Lao people need to do is hire an international team of LAWYERS and make these chinese fkers pay the affected people. Basically, the Chinese are murdering Laotians in the form of "banana plantations".
The Lao government have a RESPONSIBILITY to PROTECTS its citizens from these Chinese killers!

Reply to this commentJust let a bunch of hipsters with money open up an all organic plantation and they will ensure that the area will not be polluted and be sustainable for the future. Unlike the Chinese, they will employ more local labor with fair wages.

Reply to this commentIf we really have a good government our goverment should not rent or allow the foreigner to ground their banana in our lands and using a chemical to poison our soils. We simply have a bad government whom only seek money in their pockets and they don't care about our lands and our natural resources.

Reply to this commentSee, this is what happen when the Lao government is doing it to the agricultural sector now that Sombath Somphone is missing.
Sombath could have redeemed the country from further agricultural problems and could have easily given more socio-economico-agricultural reforms to be set up for the young and ripe workers so that they can learn things from him and behave in a professional manner, the civil society would be more open and independent labor unions can be established to further advance the society but nope the Lao government does in fact not want intelligent people being able to reform the country in a legit way and instead want to make them disappear. Such a sad reality.

I wonder if this issue is linked to the series of violent attacks against Laotian government targets, and Chinese, in the northern regions of the country?
Of course, the CIA can step in, and take control of the poppy production potential in the region....
