John from Bangkok :

Another antidotal story about a very sad situation. I want to donate to NGOs and march out on their campaign. Unfortunately I am smarter than that. The UN has made 18 the minimum age for agency of women because that is the age first world women get out of required school. But this isn't true elsewhere. Phinh had the same desires to help and she met a dangerous mentally disturbed woman. Some of the other Laos in the car with her might have done just fine. That is why this is a story of consenting smuggling. Everything can't be labeled as trafficking but it is starting to sound that way. Remittences of only a few thousand a month would have been a great benefit to her family. The world is going through a difficult transition from rural to urban society. The family farm just isn't the same as fifty years ago. But international organizations attack the few outlets for the desperations of rural people with their first world bias and stigma. The "trafficking narrative" is doing more harm than good. The problem this article alludes to is more complicated and nuanced than this article is able to tell.
