Unfortunately the only proven effective way to combat international terrorism and rogue states is to refuse to negotiate despite the diabolical circumstances of the hostages. Malaysia may have saved the lives of its citizens held hostage in this instance and no doubt boosted support for it's government but in the long term this exercise in expediency will cost many more lives. It is already known that Malaysia's willingness to pay ransom to release hostages from Abu Sayyaf has made Malaysians one of their prime targets. It also means that the deaths of many hostages from other nations who refuse to negotiate have now been in vain. When people are either so naive or plain stupid to put themselves in harms way they have no right to put other peoples lives in danger to save them from their fate.
