If you read the article it does not indicate that they think the word is American but the hamburger is "uniquely American". As in an American product, closely associated with the United States.

The origin and naming of the Hamburger is not as clear cut, and the association with Hamburg itself is not terribly strong (see "Hamburg steak" coined in NY).
