In throwing down gauntlets, Xi Jinping has been aggressive to the point of cockiness. He refuses to recognizes international agreements such as the UN's law on the seas that give each nation a 200-mile exclusive economic zone from its coasts. Xi and his military do not recognize that neighboring countries such as Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, and Malaysia have such a right. This is what is known as irredentism, and was commonly seen in the 1930s by three regimes that embroiled the world in war.
