Michael Turton from Taichung :

Taiwan was never "handed back" to the ROC in the postwar treaty arrangements. It was occupied by the ROC on behalf of the wartime allies in 1945 under the aegis of Gen. MacArthur. Japan retained sovereignty until April 28, 1952, when the San Francisco Peace Treaty of 1951 came into force. The SFPT assigns Taiwan to no one, and to this day the US, the UK, Aus, NZ, Canada, and other major powers treaty Taiwan's status as undetermined.
