This sort of clampdown by scared and thus vicious authoritarian officials also occurred with the Nationalist government in the late 1940s and the puppet Wang Jingwei regime in 1944-1945. In each case an authoritarian and unaccountable regime is desperately trying to keep a lid on dissent and opposition.
