The article properly points out that during what the Beijing regime deems politically sensitive times such as the June Fourth Crackdown anniversary or Human Rights Day, the regime's surveillance and control measures tend to tighten up. However, the suggestion that a US president from the Republican Party might raise the profile of human rights in diplomatic interchanges with Beijing is unrealistic. In fact, looking at history, Republican Party US presidents have downplayed human rights issues at the expense of business-related issues more than Democratic Party US presidents. A pompous business tycoon like Trump is even more likely to pay attention to human rights issues. Just look at the way Trump has never criticized but instead always showered praise on Vlad Putin, a notoriously authoritarian violator of human rights.
