its true that china is putting the squeeze on vpns, but 99% of chinese internet users not interested in using foreign websites, just like most western internet users are not interested in using qq, weibo, tianya, or 163

I'm in Beijing now and I can confirm VPNs are already blocked, I can't even access the VPN server on my homerouter.

I have no idea how they block, domains, IP, ports but when I return home I'll set up a computer with OpenVPN using non-default ports to see if that helps.

Meanwhile I've found Freegate to work fine, at least so I can use Teamviewer to access my work PC. Just make sure to download Freegate before you enter China.

It would be very helpful if you would link to the source for official statements.
"Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) chief engineer Zhang Feng said VPN operators must be licensed by the government, and that unlicensed VPNs are the target of new rules which come into force on March 31."
In January it was supposed to be the end of February. Now it's the end of March. Please provide documentation.

China would benefit so much from opening up from intranet to internet, I think it'll take Xi Jin Ping's successor to actually achieve this, though. Unfortunate!
