Mo Yan's somewhat lukewarm comment expressing hope that Liu Xiaobo would be released from jail soon is commendable. However, just as Wen Jiabao has mostly stopped talking about political reform, even in the abstract, Mo Yan will probably not do or say much more in defense of imprisoned or otherwise oppressed Chinese writers. After all, Mo has long been a Party member.
