Training school sausage to blame: doctors
More than 200 Chinese technical college students have been hospitalized in a mass food-poisoning incident in the northern port city of Tianjin, RFA reports.
Health care workers at the city's Dagang Hospital said a total of 222 people had been brought in, all of whom had eaten lunch in the canteen of a military training center in the city, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Doctors believed the mass poisoning was caused by spoiled chicken and sausage served to more than 3,000 people at lunch. Some of the students were receiving transfusions at the hospital, they said.
"I and some of the other students felt extremely uncomfortable after lunch," patient Cui Genghua told the news agency. "We were later rushed to the hospital."
Other students went home to nurse their symptoms, which included severe vomiting and diarrhea.
Students from four local technical colleges had grouped at the training centre for a 10-day training program when the outbreak occurred, Xinhua said. The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
Food poisoning cases are an increasingly regular occurrence in China mainly due to insufficient government monitoring of the food service industry and poor hygiene practices.
