At the start of the American Revolution, most Americans thought of themselves as Englishmen first but demanded the same rights as Englishmen in London. When the British Crown denied Americans those rights, they rebelled. During the Revolution, the British so mistreated the Colonists that eventually the majority turned against the British & began thinking of themselves as Americans first & foremost. China's mistreatment of Hong Kong is having the same effect on HK residents.
