This author misses the point. The status quo was working fine, and nothing was happening until Ishihara threatened to purchase the islands. This entire debacle was set off by Ishihara and his far right nationalists. For this author to place all the blame on China is not just unfair, it is downright dishonest. If you look at history you will see that nationalistic china leads to a lot of angry words, but nationalistic Japan leads to wars of conquest and the deaths of millions - always. It's politically correct to bash China, but be careful not to side with a very dangerous potential enemy in the process.

The only reason Ishihara offered to buy the islands was because the private owner was planning on developing them. The offer to buy was to AVOID an international row and to keep the islands undeveloped as to not provoke the Chinese. Apparently, the Chinese chose to be provoked anyway.
