I have noticed that China today is very much like Imperial Japan in the decades leading up to WW2. It is a one-party state where the military is a dominant force. There is zero tolerance for dissent or political opposition. Nationalism is promoted heavily and jingoistic speech is common by the govt. The country is a rising power but constantly complains about constraints imposed by foreign forces. There are numerous internal contradictions. And the people are expected to have blind faith in the system & the leaders. This dangerous mix lead to WW2 in Asia. What will happen today?

Reply to this commentThe unknown is the scary and excited at the same time. What will China with all the problems before them, internal and external? The external problem could involve in war with the U.S which China surely loose at the end.

Reply to this commentGreat story! I wonder if the Chinese government is fearing a revolution being so terrified of disintegration and the backlash from the citizens doing poorly and the smaller middle class used to prosperity (unless they continue to believe in Zhao). Hence it's acquisition of the South China Sea and obsession with Taiwan and a one China policy. Could a limited war be used to quell disatisfaction with Communist rule and be used to further fuel Chinese Nationalism and Han Imperialism? In other words a distraction from disunity? Of course a limited war can become a major war. Dragging Russia and NATO into it. China has a habit of staying with an idea. It's one of it's weak points but could become everyone's problem.
The Zhao worship is looking scaringly like the esoteric cultish like side of Nazi Germany leading up to WW2.
