HONG KONG —The Hong Kong Consumer Council and Hong Kong Journalists Association awarded Gregory King-Man Ho a silver medal in the radio category for consumer rights reporting.
Ho, a broadcaster in RFA’s Cantonese service, received the award at a ceremony here. He was recognized for his investigation into the use of cheap and unsanitary cooking oil in Shenzhen restaurants—some of it recycled or extracted at high temperatures from scraps fed to pigs.
“This is a great honor for RFA. It's also a victory for consumers to have this unsanitary and unsafe practice brought to light,” RFA President Libby Liu said.
The aim of the award is “to heighten the general public's awareness and understanding of consumer rights and to award press coverage of excellence on consumer rights issues and concerns.”
Judges evaluated 287 entries this year.
