Standoff between police, students in Myanmar

Myanmar students and their supporters stage a sit in on the street in front of the Aung Myay Baik Mann Monastery in Letpadan on March 3, protesting a decision by the government not to allow them to march the remaining 140 kms (85 miles) to the commercial capital Yangon. Photos: RFA Yangon

The students issued an eight- point list of demands, including freedom to continue marching to the next town and then to proceed to Yangon in cars flying their fighting peacock flag. They also want to stage a final protest at major monuments in Yangon. The government has offered to hold discussions with the students and is considering changing the education reform legislation, but warned them not to hold rallies in Yangon.
