Cambodia's ‘Avatars’

Villagers from Prey Lang forest in northern Cambodia have staged protests in Phnom Penh to highlight what they said was the destruction of one of Southeast Asia’s last intact lowland rainforests.

In the second such protests on Aug. 18, the villagers painted their bodies in green and blue and wore traditional ethnic Kuy clothing, including hats made from tree materials, saying that the clearing of the forests is affecting their traditional livelihood. Taking a cue from a recent animated feature, they dubbed themselves Cambodia's "Avatars."
